Oil Painting Demo

I did this informal 30 minute demo for my art class. They barely noticed. I asked them to paint these potatoes last week so I thought I should do it too. I like the quick paintings like this, they feel like less work and more fun.

Oil Painting Progress

Here is a near complete version of the earlier drawing and initial paintings. I need to do some work on the head......OK on the whole thing! I keep drifting into the old habits I am trying to break. I need to be more bold and stop trying to pretend to be an artist.

New Oil Painting

I finally got a few minutes to finish the painting of Marci and start anew one of Alex. It is kind of an experiment. There are some things I like but overall I have a lot to do to fix this one. It was a good experiment because I think it helped me see where I do and don't want to go with this style.

Oil Painting

I finally found an hour so that I could work on this painting a little. It's coming along but I need about one more hour to finish. It sure feels good to paint again.

Oil Painting:Late Nights

Here is another late night attempt at getting some painting done. I made more progress tonight than I did on the last before I got too tired to paint. I'll try to work on it some more tomorrow. We had sick kids the last couple nights so sleep sounds good right now.

Beginning to apply oil paint

I was able to find 1.5 hours late last night to start to put down some paint. My teaching and illustration scedules have overwelmed me the last few weeks. Hopefully I can get the upper hand this week and get some painting done.

Step-by-Step Painting:The Drawing

Step 1: This is a 12x16 drawing on the panel I will be painting. The board is 1/4 inch MDF gessoed and stained with raw umber. When the stained board dries I began a drawing using measuring, mapping, and triangulation. I fixed the drawing with a spray fixative.

Tomorrow I will begin adding carefully color matched swatches of paint beginning with the face and hands.
